Austin just came to me with tears in his eyes. I couldn't understand why he was so upset so we sat on the bed and he explained what was bothering him. He told me that he was sad to be losing his tooth. You see, he pulled out his tooth today at school. It's not the first tooth he's lost though. This is how the conversation went:
A: I'm sad that I'm losing my tooth.
B: Why is that Austin?
A: Because, I'm used to it.
B: Well, it's okay honey. You'll get a new, bigger tooth there. Then you won't miss your tooth anymore.
(Austin begins to cry)
B: Honey, what's wrong? Why are you crying?
A: I lost these (pointing to his front two teeth) and they didn't come back big.
B: It's okay honey, they will. It just takes them time to grow. They'll get bigger.
A: (Crying again) But Jacob has big teeth!
(trying to control my laughter because my son is upset for NOT having big teeth)
B: Come here honey. (hold him on my lap) Your teeth grow to the size of your mouth. You have little teeth because you have a little mouth. Jacob has big teeth because Jacob has a big mouth. (GASP...suddenly realize that I just said the wrong thing)
But...at least Austin started chuckling!!
He left and then came back within two minutes. Again, he had tears on his cheeks.
B: Honey, what's wrong now?
A: My friend, Taryn, told me in May that the tooth fairy wasn't real.
B: Well, honey, what do you believe?A: That she is real.
B: Well, then that's what matters. Not everyone believes the same things that we do, and that's okay. Maybe Taryn doesn't believe in the tooth fairy. It doesn't mean that you can't.
A: Well, it hurt my feelings when she said that.
B: I know. It will be okay. Just remember that not everyone believes the same things as we do.
And off he went to bed.
I'm sure I'll be back....until next time...
